Yi Sun-sin Square

He is celebrated for defending Korea against foreign invaders, and his face is even depicted on coins. This square honors his legacy.
Who is Admiral Yi Sun-sin?
About 500 years ago, Japan invaded Korea, then known as Joseon, as part of its plan to conquer China. Despite the dire circumstances, Admiral Yi Sun-sin never lost a naval battle against the Japanese fleet, even though the situation on land was desperate. Despite facing political opposition from his own king, he managed to cut off Japanese supply lines and turn the tide of the war. Unfortunately, he was fatally shot during the last battle.
However, the people of South Korea continue to remember and honor this hero who defended their nation. Yi Sun-sin Square serves as a place to introduce historical materials related to him. In May, the Turtle Ship Festival is held, commemorating the iconic turtle-shaped warships used in the battles. A replica of the turtle ship, created in 2014 based on historical records, is also displayed in the square.
The square is also known for its beautiful scenery. From here, you can enjoy views of the Yeosu sea, Dolsan Bridge, and Janggun Island. The blue hues of the sky and sea are stunning during the day, and at night, the area offers a beautiful night view.
Camellia Moon Souvenir Shop
This shop is located at 16-1, Tongjeyeong 4-gil, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do. You can find various items here, including hats, bags, and slippers, as well as various stickers that are perfect for decorating diaries. The shop is also famous for accessories like bracelets, necklaces, and earrings, making it a great place to purchase souvenirs. It even offers cosmetics related to camellia flowers, which are symbolic of Yeosu. The store is open from 10 AM to 8 PM.
Goso-dong Mural Village
Near Yi Sun-sin Square is a village adorned with beautiful murals. Although the uphill walk might be a bit challenging, the murals painted on the walls of the houses make the journey feel much shorter. It's important to be respectful and keep your voice down, as residents still live in these houses.
Yeosu Maritime Cable Car
This is a must-visit attraction when in Yeosu. The cable car is located at 3600-1, Dolsan-ro, Dolsan-eup, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, and operates daily from 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM. The standard round-trip fare is 15,000 KRW (approximately $10.96 USD), while the Crystal Cabin fare is 22,000 KRW (approximately $16.07 USD).
The cable car ride crosses the sea, offering breathtaking views of Yeosu. While it's lovely to ride during the day, the most popular time is at sunset, where you can enjoy the unforgettable scene of the cable car passing over the sea as the sun sets.
Manseongri Black Sand Beach
This beach, known for its black sand, is an unusual and scenic spot located in Manheung-dong, Yeosu-si. The black sand is said to have formed from sedimentary rocks dating back to the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era.
The beach is about 540 meters long and 25 meters wide, with an average water temperature of 25°C. During summer, it attracts many visitors for swimming. The black sand is also believed to be good for sand baths.
Yeosu Luge at U-World
Located at 155, Ansimsan-gil, Sora-myeon, Yeosu-si, this is a fun tourist spot open from 10 AM to 7 PM. Here, you can ride gravity-powered luge carts down a downhill track.
