Jeonju Hanok Village in Jeolla Province What to See Do and Eat

Most modern Koreans live in apartment-style homes, but in the past, traditional houses known as "hanok" were common. These houses are beautiful and hold significant cultural value as they represent our ancestors' way of life. Jeonju, located in South Korea's Jeolla Province, has a well-preserved area of these traditional houses, known as Jeonju Hanok Village.

Jeonju Hanok Village is a must-visit destination whenever I travel to Jeonju. It's rich with culinary delights and enjoyable activities, making it a popular spot for travelers. The village is larger than you might expect, offering plenty to see and do, which is why I highly recommend it as a travel destination.

Recommended Entrance to Hanok Village

There are various ways to enter Jeonju Hanok Village, and each route offers its own unique charm. However, my favorite way to enter is by crossing the Namcheongyo Bridge. This path leads you to Cheongyeonru, a picturesque spot showcasing traditional Eastern beauty. Continuing along Jeonjucheon Dong-ro, you'll encounter various alleys where you can explore and enjoy local treats like PNB choco pies from Pungnyeon Bakery and dumplings from Dawoorang.

What to See

In Hanok Village, you can admire the beautifully tiled black roofs known as "giwa." Renting and wearing traditional Korean clothing, "hanbok," is a popular activity here, adding to the village's unique atmosphere. Many tourists, both Korean and international, enjoy walking around in hanbok, creating a charming and nostalgic vibe.

The village is surrounded by beautiful flowers, numerous restaurants, and cafes. One of the cafes I visited offered a stunning panoramic view of the entire village, which was an excellent place to relax with a cup of coffee or tea. Korean cafes are perfect for unwinding and enjoying the scenery.

Another notable site in Hanok Village is Jeondong Catholic Church, built in 1914. This historic site was once a place of martyrdom for Catholics in Korea from 1791 to 1801. The church is also home to a giant ginkgo tree over 350 years old, adding to the area's serene and reflective atmosphere.

What to Do

One of the most enjoyable activities in Hanok Village is renting a scooter that can accommodate up to four people. While walking around is delightful, a scooter ride allows you to explore every corner of the village more conveniently and enjoyably.

What to Eat

You can find dalgona, a traditional Korean candy made from sugar, which gained fame from the show "Squid Game." PNB choco pies and yakgwa (traditional Korean sweets) from Pungnyeon Bakery make great souvenirs. Dawoorang's dumplings come in ten different varieties, all of which are delicious. Jeolla Province, where Jeonju is located, is renowned for its delectable cuisine. Any restaurant near Hanok Village is likely to offer satisfying meals. I particularly enjoyed a meal of water galbi, a local specialty.

If you want to experience the traditional Korean atmosphere, Jeonju Hanok Village is a must-visit destination. It is a beautifully preserved area showcasing the traditional homes of our ancestors, offering a unique and enriching experience.
